Functional Roles

• Thickener & hardener: Adds structure to balms, butters, and sticks.
• Emulsion stabilizer: Provides body and stability to O/W or W/O emulsions.
• Film former: Creates a protective barrier on skin or lips, reducing transepidermal water loss.
• Polish & gloss agent: Used in lip balms, ointments, and hair pomades for added sheen.
• Viscosity modifier: Controls texture and stiffness in creams, salves, and lotions.

Applications in Cosmetics and Topicals

• Lip balms & butters: Provides firmness and smooth glide.
• Body butters & lotions: Adds body and a protective feel.
• Creams & ointments: Acts as a thickener and occlusive agent.
• Hair pomades / beard waxes: Adds hold, structure, and shine.
• Soaps & candles: Hardens and improves burn characteristics.

Typical Use Levels

• Creams and lotions: 1–5%

• Balms, salves, and butters: 5–20%

• Lipsticks & lip balms: 10–25%

• Hair pomades: 5–15%

Melt in the oil phase and combine at approximately 70 °C with other oils, butters, or emulsifiers.
