💧 Why glycerin is so effective
- Attracts & binds water into the stratum corneum
- Improves skin barrier function
- Reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL)
- Smooths skin texture
- Enhances performance of other actives
- It works in all climates when properly balanced with emollients.
🧴 Common uses
- Toners & serums
- Creams & lotions
- Facial & body cleansers
- Shampoos & conditioners
- Soaps (transparent soaps especially)
- Masks & scrubs
Recommended usage rates
- Leave-on skincare: 2–5%
- Rinse-off products: 2–10%
- Hair care: 1–5%
- Soaps: 5–15%
- Note: Above ~5% in leave-on products can feel sticky unless balanced.
⚗️ Formulation notes (important)
- Add to water phase
- Stable across pH 3–10
- Compatible with almost all cosmetic ingredients
- High % may:
- Feel tacky
- Increase drying sensation in very dry air if not sealed
- 👉 Always pair with emollients/occlusives (oils, butters, silicones).
🛡️ Preservation & safety
- Glycerine is not a preservative
- Water-based formulas must be preserved
- Very safe, non-irritating
- Suitable for babies & sensitive skin
⚠️ Common mistakes
- Using too much in leave-on products
- Not sealing hydration with oils or creams
- Assuming glycerin preserves products (it doesn’t)
