🌿 Function in Cosmetics & Skincare
Papain is primarily used as an exfoliating and skin-renewing enzyme that gently removes dead skin cells without harsh scrubbing.
Key skin benefits:
- Gentle enzymatic exfoliation: Dissolves keratin and dead surface proteins for smoother skin.
- Brightening effect: Promotes an even skin tone and radiance.
- Improves texture: Helps unclog pores and smooth fine lines.
- Supports cell renewal: Stimulates skin regeneration.
- Soothing: Can aid in reducing inflammation and swelling (at low concentrations).
Formulation Notes
- Typical concentration: 0.1–1% (depending on purity and activity).
- Add during the cool-down phase (<40 °C) to preserve enzyme activity.
- Works well in water-based systems like:
- Enzyme masks
- Exfoliating gels
- Cleansers
- Foot peels
Formulation Tips:
- Maintain pH between 5.5 and 7.0 for best activity.
- Avoid high heat, alcohol, or strong acids/bases—they deactivate papain.
- Combine with bromelain (from pineapple) for synergistic exfoliation.
- Stabilize with glycerin, sorbitol, or sodium benzoate if aqueous.
Mechanism of Action
Papain works by cleaving peptide bonds in the keratin proteins that make up the stratum corneum (outer skin layer). This loosens dead cells and promotes their removal — producing a gentler alternative to AHAs or BHAs.
Safety & Stability
Generally considered safe and non-toxic, but can cause irritation on sensitive skin or at high levels.
Avoid use on broken or inflamed skin.
