Description
Ceramides are skin-identical lipids that are essential for a healthy skin barrier. They’re one of the most powerful actives used in modern skincare, dermatology, and sensitive-skin formulations.
INCI Name: Ceramide NP (Ceramide 3)
Function: Barrier repair & moisture retention
Why ceramides are so effective:
- Repair damaged skin barrier
- Reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL)
- Improve hydration & elasticity
- Calm eczema-prone & sensitive skin
- Strengthen skin against acne, irritation & over-exfoliation
- Support anti-aging routines
- They don’t exfoliate or “force change” — they restore.
Application:
- Moisturizers & barrier creams
- Serums & lotions
- Cleansers (low % for rinse-off)
- Baby & sensitive-skin products
- Post-procedure skincare
- Acne-repair routines (with retinoids or acids)
Usage levels (important)
- Ceramides are used at very low concentrations:
- Leave-on products: 0.05–1.0%
- Cleansers: 0.01–0.2%
- More is not better — effectiveness comes from correct structure, not high %.
- Solubility: Water
- Ideal pH: 4.5–7.0
- Heat sensitive — avoid prolonged heating
✅️ Best-performing combinations
Ceramides work best with:
- Cholesterol
- Free fatty acids (linoleic acid, stearic acid)
- Humectants: glycerin, hyaluronic acid
- Soothers: panthenol, allantoin, centella
- 👉 This mimics natural skin lipid structure.
- 🛡️ Preservation & stability
- Ceramides do not preserve products
- Any water-based formula needs a preservative
- Stable in well-emulsified systems
