Sucrose laureate is an interesting ingredient in the formulation. Its primary use is emulsification and surfactant, though at formulators Haven lab we use it as an oil thickener. Sucrose laurate as a thickener can create oily gels that emulsify at 20-25% creating oil gel textures that are in anhydrous form (water-free) with a non-greasy skin feel, reducing oily sensation in some formulations. Sucrose Laurate as an oil thickener increases the viscosity of the oil formulation with a higher concentration of around 3-5% more effective for oil thickening.
Sucrose laurate chemical composition is Ester of sucrose and lauric acid which are part of the Sucrose ester family.
Sucrose laureate is extracted from natural sources sugar and coconut or palm oils. Sucrose laureate effectiveness in lighter oils with a variety of cosmetic oils including vegetable oils and synthetic esters.
During the formulation process always remember sucrose laurate is heat sensitive therefore sucrose laurate addition is done at lower temperatures with careful blending required to achieve the desired thickening.
